Watoto Africa Mission Trip - June 2009
In June four families and one college student from Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church spent 10 days in Uganda building a classroom for AIDS/war orphans near the capital city of Kampala. This team, organized by John and Stephanie Allen, served Watoto Childcare Ministries, an arm of Kampala Pentecostal Church.
The group reported on their travels and experiences on their blog which they updated as they found internet access.
A video of the team's combined sermon and team report, "God's Call Sends Us on a Journey", presented at the 10 AM worship on July 26 is available on the Worship & Sermons webpage.
The vision of Watoto is to develop the next generation of leaders by assisting some of these 1 to 2 million orphans, who are the least and last of Ugandan society. This vision is accomplished through building villages consisting of a cell-church, school for pre-school age through high school, and group of homes designed for one mother and 8 children.
Each village has a social worker who trains and supervises the mothers. These mothers are often widows, who have one or two biological children themselves in the home. The children are provided with a stable family group, education and spiritual grounding in the Christian faith.
