Women's Retreat, March 9–11

Women's Retreat Speaker Michelle Vecchio-LyzengaCultivating a Sabbath Way of Life.

We live in a frenzied, performance-driven culture in which overflowing calendars are a status symbol and crazy work hours a virtue. And yet, if we’re honest with one another, most of us are parched. For rest but, even more deeply, for experiencing God’s presence. Over the course of the weekend we will explore what it might look like to cultivate a Sabbath way of life together—of ceasing hurry and endless production to living attentively to the presence of God and others in our regular rhythm of life, in whatever season we find ourselves.

Our 2018 speaker will be Michelle Vecchio-Lyzenga, Director for Community Life at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley.  A native of northern California, Michelle attended Calvin College in Michigan, where she studied English literature and religion. Realizing that what had begun as “guilty pleasure” courses in biblical studies and theology had developed into a call to Christian education and formation, Michelle headed further east to pursue a Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary. A lifelong Presbyterian and longtime lay leader in diverse, urban congregations, Michelle is passionate about fostering Christian community that is radically hospitable, intellectually engaged, and socially active. A lover of narrative, she believes that relationship and transformation begins with story-sharing.

Women's Retreat 2012The retreat will be held at Vallombrosa Center located on 10 serene acres in Menlo Park, 13 miles north of SVPC. The beautiful grounds at Vallombrosa, with their clear light, rich green lawns and lush, towering trees, are a natural place for prayer and reflection. Meals are appetizing and nutritious; sleeping quarters are spotlessly clean, simple and comfortable; and staff is friendly and helpful. You are encouraged to arrange your own carpool/ride sharing as parking is limited.
